A  TRUE Story - One That Shows What Photography Can Really Mean

I want to tell you a true story - one that actually brings me to tears every time I tell it.  As hard as it may be to believe, I promise you this actually happened...

About 11 years ago, I was asked to photograph a wedding. (Yes, I photograph weddings too.) Although I enjoy creating family portraits a little more, photographing weddings is always wonderfully emotional.  Sometimes, it's the first time the entire family has been together in years. And, the couple is probably at their absolute happiest on this day.

The bride's name was Sue, and she and her family were so wonderful. The wedding was perfect. The photographs turned out perfectly.  Sue even called me the day after she received her albums to thank me for helping to make her wedding such a wonderful success, and for creating such cherished memories for her, and her family to keep forever.

Now, Fast-Forward About A Year Later...  A Tragedy Happened, And Sue's Mother's Life Was Never The Same.

A Year of wedded bliss later, Sue's grandfather passed on...

....Sues Mother, "Joyce" Was looking through her photos.

Joyce came across a photo of her dad which I took at Sue's Wedding.

The Wedding was winding down and there was a bit of a lull. As I mingled and sought out something creative or fun to document I came across Joyce's dad sitting at a table, and not to intrude I snapped a couple of very dramatic shots of him. I then assisted him out to the lobby and took some more photos using the halls amenities.

Passing Family Heirlooms And Meaningful Trinkets Collected Over Lifetimes, What She Chose To Clutch To Her Heart was one of the photos which I took of her dad. Makes Me So Proud I Could Just Burst.

I found out about this myself the next day when Joyce called me on the phone. In tears, she told me about the tragedy. Then, she told me about the new meaning of the photos I created for her.   By the end of the conversation, both Joyce and I were in tears.

That very story sums up the reason I became a photographer.  Creating photographs that mean that much to people - I can't imagine anything that would make me feel more fulfilled as an artist.

Joyce Realized That The One Thing That Can Never Be Replaced - That We MUST Hold On To - Are The Memories We Share With Those We Love.

Life is so terribly short. But, at the same time, life is such a wonderful gift.  And the memories we keep of these moments with our family will last forever.
